Microsoft is acquiring voice recognition company Nuance Communications as it competes with other cloud companies for a share of the healthcare market.

Nuance is best known for its Dragon software, which uses deep learning to transcribe speech and improves its accuracy over time by adapting to a user's voice. Nuance has licensed this tech for many services and applications, including, most famously, Apple's digital assistant Siri. (Though to what degree Siri currently relies on Dragon to answer users' queries is unclear.) Dragon is an industry leader in terms of transcription accuracy.

Nuance would be aligned with the part of Microsoft's business that serves businesses and governments. Nuance derives revenue by selling tools for recognizing and transcribing speech in doctor office visits, customer-service calls and voicemails. In its announcement, Microsoft said Nuance's technology will be used to augment Microsoft's cloud products for health care, which were launched last year.

Microsoft said it expects the transaction to close during the current calendar year, pending regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. Nuance CEO Mark Benjamin will stay with the company in his current role and report to Scott Guthrie, who is the executive vice president of Microsoft’s cloud and AI business. Financials from the division will be reported under Microsoft's Intelligent Cloud segment, we're told.
