Internet Explorer has recovered its market share last month. The browser gained 1 percentage point during March, said measurement firm Net Applications, to end the month with a 53.8% share, its highest level since September 2011.

"With a gain of .99% last month and a net gain of 1.2% global usage share over the last five months, Internet Explorer has stabilized and even reversed its usage share declines of the last few years", Net Applications said.

Meanwhile, both Firefox and Chrome lost support in the latest monthly numbers. Firefox now only accounts for 20.6% of online browsing sessions, the lowest number that Net Applications has reported since early 2009. Google's Chrome was in third place with 18.57 percent, down from 18.9 percent, while Apple's Safari dropped from 5.2 percent to 5.07 percent.

Net Applications calculates browser usage share with data obtained from more than 160 million unique visitors who browse 40,000 Web sites that the company monitors. For example, it gets a huge amount of data about US usage from the CIA, but its data in China is more scattered, so it weighs those numbers from China more heavily so as to account for the potentially missing numbers.
