The FCC is moving forward on 5G2016-06-21 16:11 by DanielaTags: FCC, 5G
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission plans to open up high-frequency spectrum for 5G mobile services in an effort to speed up the process of adopting the new technology. On Thursday, FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will circulate a proposal to kick off 5G wireless proceedings. The FCC will vote on the issue on 14 July. "If the Commission approves my proposal next month, the United States will be the first country in the world to open up high-band spectrum for 5G networks and applications," FCC chairman Tom Wheeler said. "And that’s damn important because it means US companies will be first out of the gate." "Turning innovators loose is far preferable to expecting committees and regulators to define the future," he added. "Instead, we will make ample spectrum available and then rely on a private sector-led process for producing technical standards best suited for those frequencies and use cases." The FCC plans to use 200 MHz-wide chunks of high-band spectrum because, unlike lower frequencies, it can offer the gigabit per second throughput and sub-millisecond latency that 5G applications demand. The next-generation 5G infrastructure is expected to be 10 to 100 times faster than 4G and be far more responsive to allow advanced technologies like virtual surgery or controlling machines remotely.
